  • ABOUT THE ARTIST

"I have devoted my whole life to sculpture. It is an urge to express something. I believe in my ideas and I have a need to execute them; perhaps, at times, it is an issue of neurosis". This is how she verbally expresses what her mind envisages. A melting pot of imagery and feelings that become alive in her work; figurative and roughly sculpted pieces, almost impressionist, in which the postures become mobile through the limbs like in a dance.

With a love for Chagall and in clear pursuit of harmony with nature, she appears non-conformist with the world and seeks to believe in humankind. Her sensitivity, as a result, is clearly exposed in Soñadora [Dreamer], Maternidad [Maternity] or Pubertad [Puberty], where the true artistic purposes are emotional and expressed through experimenting with shapes. However, there are also more profound messages, like that of Tirititero, an homage, the artist claims, to the work of Gargallo and with an underlying reflection on the social hierarchy, or a conscious and well-executed nod to The Card Players of Cezanne in her Tú y Yo [You and I].

Luisa Rodríguez achieves form by handling the material whilst "remembering the classics" as well as after many years of experience in the workshop using, analysing and examining the visual possibilities of all types of materials (iron, wood, bronze, alabaster).
